WSP has strong capability in evaluating resource potential, providing advice on design, procurement, implementation and operation monitoring across the range of solar technologies. Read more in our brochure and from a selection of projects below.
One of South Africa’s largest CSP projects
Energy efficiency and demand-side management have failed to meet South Africa’s spiralling need for power so the proposed Kalahari Solar Power project represents an important strand of future energy policy. WSP is undertaking the environmental impact assessment for this project providing vital information for the planning and design stages of what could be one of Africa’s largest CSP projects. In addition, we are also managing the stakeholder consultation process which could be challenging given the potential changes to the landscape.
Solar evaluation for the UK Government
DEFRA (Department for Food and Rural Affairs) is responsible for a large and diverse estate. WSP helped to provide an integrated and innovative assessment of the renewable energy and low carbon supply options with one of DEFRAs largest and most complex sites. Our study included technology and resource evaluations (including solar thermal and solar PV), an assessment of cost and payback for the measures deployed, an assessment of regulatory risks and consideration of practical implementation challenges such as system integration and maintenance.
The world’s first zero-carbon zero-waste city
WSP has been commissioned by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company to carry out the overall infrastructure and utilities masterplan for the Masdar zero carbon development in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Since then, WSP has been retained as technical peer-reviewers for the infrastructure and building designs. More recently, we have been managing the design of four of the city's buildings in the first stage of development, where buildings are to be fully self-sustainable with renewable energy, namely photovoltaic modules.
One of the largest domestic installations of PV in the UK
Graylingwell is a flagship, zero-carbon community and WSP has mapped out the ‘net zero carbon’ strategy. Alongside strategies to reduce carbon emissions and water consumption, and examining CHP systems with connections back to the Grid, we recommended the buildings be orientated to be south facing to optimise sun exposure to roof-mounted solar panels. The installation of solar panels is a challenge in itself as this installation will amount to approximately 15,000m2 of photovoltaic [PV] panels, one of the largest ever domestic installations in the UK.
South England Solar Farms
On behalf of a confidential EPC contractor, we are currently providing technical advice and detailed design for a large number of proposed ‘Solar Farms’ in England located primarily in the south of the country in Cornwall and Devon. Works are at an advanced stage where our support includes activities for both planning applications and detailed design where approved. Our work includes; site inspections and constraints analysis, determining methods for PV cell connections, site layout planning, grid connection and more.
