Atrium acoustics for Swedish Air Force, Sweden

WSP conducted acoustic modelling for the atriums architects and designed a series of solutions to deliver an open and pleasant working environment for staff

Atrium acoustics for Swedish Air Force, Sweden

An atrium acoustics project conducted by WSP's acoustics team involved room acoustic modelling and detailed liaisons with the project architect. The objective was to generate an open, spacious feel for visitors whilst ensuring a pleasant working environment for staff.

Acoustic treatments, in the form of surface mounted sound absorbers, had to meet the architect’s demands for colour, texture and light reflectance. A 3D computer model of the atrium was created using CATT acoustics software. This system allowed the consultant to determine the extent of and ideal locations for, acoustically absorptive finishes within the space.

A variety of alternatives were assessed and reverberation times predicted for each case. Close dialog with the architect helped choosing the look of the selected absorbers and acceptable locations for them. The predictions from the acoustic model also showed the most effective and economical locations for treatment , in this case, on a longitudinal wall just below the inclined glazed roof – an ideal position to catch all noise reflections from the roof. The chosen absorbers on this wall had very high efficiency.

Our solutions for the atrium included:

  • Slotted wooden panels were used in the lower sections of the atrium
  • The panels were placed to follow the architectural design style of the atrium
  • The wood was chosen to match the furniture and the handrail in the stairs
  • The selected furniture had sound absorbing properties
  • High-graded absorbers on surfaces were not directly visible at the underside of stairs and bridges
  • Micro-perforated gypsum boards were placed at a high level on walls, just below the glazed roof
  • Two rest area booths were specially treated with absorbers to create very quiet areas for privacy
  • Absorbers were focused in the most efficient areas by combining architectural and acoustic design ideas and computer modelling. This led to cost efficient acoustic treatment to the atrium.
