Urban design and master planning

With its dedicated specialist team WSP brings a synergy between the requirements of transport planning and the art of place-making

Movement is essential to the growth and longevity of sustainable communities. Successful places are always based on a movement framework that allows for all modes of movement and users to be provided for in a balanced manner, along with the creation of places that respond well to the human scale and can endure the tests of time.

WSP provides a wide range of services, encompassing land use, transportation, housing, open space and recreation, public and human services and environmental and heritage resources, planning as well as decision making processes and development of urban planning methods.

Far too often the ‘highways design’ of places is separated out from the overall design development and this often leads to places where roads dominate and pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users’ space is downgraded and/or severely limited.

Through WSP’s pioneering design work on applying movement frameworks and street design concepts to masterplans we are able to create places that respond to the needs of all.

Our specialists work across the world, contributing to teams and innovating where appropriate, but ensuring our solutions offer value, are pragmatic, and are deliverable.

WSP works closely with urban designers and master planners to provide design advice and expertise in relation to movement issues for development projects.

These range in scale from a few hundred dwellings to many thousands, for example; 5,500 dwellings for an urban extension to Plymouth (UK) at Sherford; 25,000 dwellings and mixed uses for a new community at Harlow (UK) and strategic transport planning and master-planning for eleven towns along the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
