Our structural engineers take a lead role in managing the WSP multi-disciplinary offering to ensure that the client receives an integrated engineering solution from initial site acquisition, through the planning process and into the construction and delivery phase. By working hand in hand with all members of the design team we aim to ensure a smooth passage through the statutory and legislative processes to ensure that the vision for the building is achievable in a practical way.
We are very often dealing with challenging ground conditions caused by the nature of the ground or the infrastructure that runs through it. We also have to face the challenge of making a structure efficient in its design - minimising cost and effect on the environment; and optimising its utilisation through reducing slab thickness and hence storey heights, and maximising its free spans and lowering the impact of structural; columns.
It is important that we are leading exponents of each of these constituent elements. Our approach is to ensure that our engineers are exposed to the latest techniques, learning and analytical tools. At a business level we have a series of Technical Boards which are responsible for ensuring that our technical offering is constantly being developed. They are responsible for ensuring that knowledge is shared around the business and that use to ensure that we are at the forefront of service delivery.
