Aviation is a major UK industry, carrying over 180 million passengers a year and over 2.1 million tonnes of freight (see http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/aviation/). Despite climate change concerns, demand for air travel is growing.
Core services
From project inception, utilising our capabilities in strategic planning, corporate strategy and master planning, through design, project delivery and asset and facilities management, WSP offers a full range of services in the aviation sector.
Our work is driven by relationships with operators where we work as part of an integrated supply chain to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions to this rapidly changing and increasingly legislated industry.
We are committed to finding solutions that offer the lowest negative impact on the environment; our work on one of Europe’s largest construction projects of the 21st Century - Terminal 5 (T5) at Heathrow Airport - is testament to this. WSP has a range of commissions at T5 including building services design associated with the terminal buildings for BAA; the building services fit-out of the CIP lounges for British Airways; and multi-disciplinary engineering associated with various ancillary buildings. In addition we are British Airways Technical Advisor and we were commissioned to work jointly for British Airways and BAA to assist in managing the environmental waste management aspects of the project.
Specialist skills
Our extensive experience - both in the UK and overseas - and an expert team mean that we are able to offer clients a range of specialist skills all the way through airfield layout and design, to security and baggage handling.
An example of our airfield layout expertise is our innovative design for Manchester Airport West Aprons Phase 6A and 6B, which achieved a significant reduction in the construction programme with obvious benefits for the client.
