Roads and bridges are vital to every community serving as arteries for goods transportation and people movement. An appropriate and efficient network of roads and bridges, intelligently engineered to reduce congestion and accidents, is of central importance to economies across the globe. By bringing together the required disciplines under one roof, WSP has become a world-leader in the roads and bridges engineering sector.
Core services
WSP’s projects include all types of highways, from local access and rural roads to major urban and strategic routes. Bridge engineering plays an important part in many of our road projects, and we provide innovative and cost effective solutions in steel and concrete.
The services we provide include feasibility studies, public consultation processes, route planning, junction design and assessment, highway design, safety audit, and supervision and inspection. We conduct highway condition surveys and capture vehicle flow rates, plus we prepare operation and maintenance contracts. We also carry out road audits at design and post construction stages and identify measures to increase safety for road users.
WSP’s knowledge and experience enables us to manage all the planning stages of road and bridge projects, from feasibility analysis and preliminary design to the production of detailed design and construction documents - including contract documentation. The new landmark Hungerford Bridges in London, completed in 2002, are testimony to WSP’s expertise and earned awards from - among others - the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Civic Trust and the Westminster Society. Our skills are in demand internationally as evidenced by our work in Bangladesh where since 1994, WSP has provided extensive management and technical assistance as lead consultant to the Bangladesh Roads and Highways Department (RHD), as part of a DFID (Department for International Development) funded project. We were designers on the M25 junction 12-15 widening, including the spur road to Heathrow terminal 5 and are currently engaged on the improvements to the M1 junction 25-28.
