WSP Group – engineering consultants

WSP UK

Energy and natural resources

WSP’s specialist energy business delivers commercially focussed and pragmatic solutions on matters such as renewable energy, energy supply, clean energy production and energy infrastructure and demand to the property, transport and infrastructure and industry sectors, all of which are increasingly subject to ever more legislation and compliance.

Energy and natural resources

In February 2003, the Energy White Paper “Our Energy Future – Creating a Low Carbon Economy” set out a new framework for energy policy. A key goal of the paper was putting the UK on a path to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by some 60% by about 2050. A second goal is to maintain the reliability of Britain’s energy supplies. The current global focus on environmental sustainability and climate change makes for a growing and increasingly active Energy and Natural Resources sector. The recent 2007 White Paper reinforces the UK’s drive towards a low carbon economy.

Core services

WSP is at the forefront of advising national and international businesses, governments and developers on the increasingly important issues that relate to the carbon agenda, climate change and sustainability.

We deliver commercially focussed, pragmatic solutions on matters such as energy supply, clean energy production, and energy infrastructure and demand. Uniquely, we combine these services with strategic sustainable planning expertise and the delivery of advanced technological solutions. We also design, deliver and invest in our own energy projects.

Specialist services renewable energy

WSP Energy was formed in 2006 as a specialist business to address issues in this sector and has already gained global experience. In Po Kong Village, WSP Energy was commissioned to review a range of sustainable strategies to enable the designers of Hong Kong’s first carbon neutral park to incorporate sustainability into the park’s design. In South Africa, WSP Energy is the owner of a fuel switching project for a citrus fruit producer which is enabling the supplier to switch from a coal to a biomass boiler saving 19,000 tonnes of CO2e annually and sell the resulting CERs to FIFA.

Our global capability enables us to deliver large and diverse energy projects, providing support from inception through to completion. We draw together experienced project managers, financiers, engineers and technical and commercial consultants from across WSP, in order to deliver technical and commercial excellence to our clients.

Our specialist services are grouped into four core areas:

  • Energy and emissions management: helping organisations to manage their energy usage, improve their efficiency, drive down costs and reduce carbon emissions.
  • Project investment and development: creating investment strategies to deliver cleaner energy production, whilst also investing directly in energy projects.
  • Sustainability solutions: advising on urban master planning, green building design, climate change, micro-climate studies and the use of renewables in building design.
  • Climate change consultancy: managing climate change strategies, and emission and carbon financing, whilst supporting owners and participants of CDM and JI initiatives.
