Paddington Station Span 4 Roof Renewal, UK

WSP was initially appointed in 2007 to provide assessment works and feasibility studies and subsequently detailed design for the renewal of structures and platforms associated with the Span 4 roof at the Grade I Listed Paddington station.

Paddington Station Span 4 Roof Renewal, UK

The roof comprises a number of structural elements and the oldest, including the main train shed roof Spans 1-3, was built in the 1850’s by I. K. Brunel. Various developments and alterations have been made with the most substantial being the addition of Span 4 train shed roof and the London Street deck in 1916. Span 4 has not been maintained for a significant time, such that it has started to fall into disrepair. A scaffold crash deck has been installed below the majority of the span to protect the station from falling debris. There is a tension fabric canopy below the section of Span 4 over the concourse area.
