New Providence Wharf is a prestigious, high density, residentially-led mixed use development on the site of the former Charrington’s Wharf oil depot close to London’s Canary Wharf.
The scheme includes 1050 residential units in two river-front buildings and a 169 bedroom hotel and 42,500 sq m of commercial office space. 31% of the site area is dedicated to open space, with a public boulevard running along the landscaped riverside.
WSP was appointed to assist in the development of proposals for the site, supporting the client’s application for planning permission and addressing the complex engineering issues associated with the site. In providing a multi disciplinary range of services, WSP was involved from the outset, through the stages of public consultation and meeting significant technical challenges along the way.
Award-winning design
The scheme has won many awards and the commendation of the commercial, planning and architectural worlds. It demonstrates how a successful balance can be struck between the aims of the planning authorities and market drivers to achieve a design that is inclusive, accessible for all, sustainable and safe.
Technical challenges
- Securing agreement from the local authority to develop the site with low levels of car parking provision, and developing an approach using mechanical car parking systems and valet management
- A flexible approach in which the structural design was changed from staggered steel trusses to post-tensioned concrete in response to market conditions
- Construction methodology and structural solutions for building the hotel over the Blackwall tunnel and facilitating the legal agreement with Transport for London within tight time scales
- WSP also advised on the implications and alternative foundation solutions to building over the proposed alignment of the Crossrail tunnels.
