The project composed construction of 24,000m2 of new purpose designed academic accommodation, including classrooms, lecture theatres and exhibition space. The university’s School of Design, School of Law and Newcastle Business School have been relocated to the new site.
Services provided
The project involved transforming a former brownfield site and overcoming challenges posed by presence of partly contaminated fill. WSP provided geotechnical and contamination investigation services and full structural and civil design for City Campus East.
Innovations
WSP’s design included stainless steel mesh panels on two elevations, an elliptical tapered full height atrium and rain water harvesting.
Sustainability
The development had a significant economic impact within the business community in the North East with a large number of orders going to regional firms. 95% of materials from the site were recycled, 75% of which were used on the new build itself.
