The façade of the station was also remodelled and local and transport interchange facilities improved to provide a Twenty First Century Gateway to the City.
WSP were appointed in 2005 by Network Rail as Lead Consultant to undertake a study to consider, in detail, the options for the proposed £350m redevelopment scheme for Birmingham New Street station and to develop a preferred solution, Network Rail Grip stages 3 & 4.
This resulted in an approved scheme to increase station capacity, provide
modern facilities, improve arrival points, provide a new roof to the concourse and retail areas and enhance pedestrian connectivity to the City. WSP’s team was a combination of in house structural, civil, mechanical and electrical engineers and alliance architects John McAslan and Partners and Chapman Taylor.
