WSP breaks into Danish market with competition win

Thursday, April 30, 2009

Success in a design competition has given WSP its first major breakthrough into the Danish market. WSP teamed up with Danish architect KHR, energy consultant Cenergia and Bisgaard Landskabsarkitekter to design a new school, library and after-school care facilities in Ørestad on the outskirts of Copenhagen.

The architecture is inspired by an Italian mountain village.  Inside the various floors and the connections between them are designed like streets in a mountain village with a variety of narrow passages, piazzas, quiet rooms and views over the surrounding areas.  Outside the public are invited to explore the myriad of small alleys and terraces accessible via external stairways.

The building has been designed for maximum energy efficiency and aims to be a flagship for Copenhagen’s commitment to becoming a sustainable community.

WSP will be responsible for the design of the mechanical, electrical and wet  services in the building as well as fire, acoustics and traffic.

Construction of the 290 million Danish Kroner project will begin during the summer of 2009, with completion due in September 2011.
