Registration of calcium carbonate according to REACH

In the softening process of drinking water at Bulltofta waterworks VA SYD uses calcium hydroxide and in the process so-called limestone granules are formed. The limestone granules consist of grains of sand covered with calcium carbonate which is formed and precipitated in the process.

Registration of calcium carbonate acc to REACH (VA SYD)

Under REACH, all who manufacture chemicals have to register them if the manufactured amount equals 1 ton/year or more and the substance is not exempt registration under the regulation.

WSP Environmental has in a first step evaluated whether calcium carbonate is required to be registered by VA SYD and in a second step, managed the registration process. Registration under REACH meant participation in the SIEF, the purchase of a Letter of Access to common parts of the registration dossier and the completion of individual parts of the dossier. The dossier was completed by using the software IUCLID5 and the final registration was submitted electronically via the REACH-IT portal on the ECHA website. The registration of calcium carbonate by VA SYD has been accepted by ECHA.
