The Hakamäentie road is an important but congested cross-wise route for Helsinki traffic. According to forecasts, traffic on the Hakamäentie road will increase by up to 50,000 vehicles per day by 2020. The improvement of the Hakamäentie road has been completed in August 2009. The made improvements will significantly ease the congestion on arterial roads and in local traffic.
WSP was one of the design partners of the project implementer, Destia. WSP was also in charge of the route planning for the western part of the project. In addition, WSP is charged with the structural engineering and ground stabilisation planning for several projects and the architectural solutions for the entire route.
A continuous 2 + 2 lane route has been constructed on the Hakamäentie road from Lapinmäentie all the way to Mäkelänkatu. The project included the Mannerheimintie, Ilmala, Veturitie and Ratapihantie junctions, which were turned into interchanges. A 320 m tunnel was constructed for Hakamäentie at the Mannerheimintie junction. Routes for pedestrians and cyclists were improved by adding underpasses and overpasses. Some 3 km of noise barriers have been constructed in conjunction with the improvement. The City of Helsinki is in charge of 34% of the project funding with the state paying for 66%.
The project tasks were varied and interesting. The implementation model (design and implementation) brings in added challenges: with design and implementation proceeding simultaneously, all parties have had to be actively involved throughout the project. The construction site has had a real opportunity to influence the plans.
