In situ diagnostics and remediation

WSP Environment & Energy has an internationally renowned, state-of-the art practice related to in situ diagnostics and in situ remediation services.

WSP has saved clients significant cost and accelerated the time to closure by employing advanced site diagnostics. We are uniquely qualified to implement in situ remediation technologies and monitored natural attenuation (MNA). This program complements the remediation services that WSP has successfully provided to our clients for 20 years.

The advent of new technical and developmental changes in environmental remediation has enabled us to develop a comprehensive service plan to achieve earlier site closure. The Advanced Site Closure Program offered by WSP stands alone is the most comprehensive in the industry for several reasons:

  • Our scientific and engineering staff are not only current with the latest technologies, but have been instrumental in their development and implementation.
  • Our direct experience in site closure is complete in scope and exemplary in performance and results.
  • We are without peer in the industry in our knowledge of insurance and liability transfer. The company helped develop the technical underwriting guidelines for several insurers. Furthermore, we have been champions in the liability transfer industry for over a decade.
  • We have demonstrated a capability to technologically challenge regulators while also creating a sense of partnership with them. With specific reference to MNA, our scientific and engineering staff have served on panels and been engaged in other mechanisms to establish MNA as an accepted remediation approach.

Site remediation has evolved from energy intensive, mechanically driven remediation processes to more effective and cost efficient in situ processes. In situ remediation is best served when it incorporates advanced technologies, such as molecular biology, stable isotope analysis, and advanced geophysical methods. These advanced technologies ensure the optimization of in situ methods, such as bioremediation, chemical oxidation, chemical reduction, treatment trains thereof, and also MNA. Furthermore, there is a great deal of variation within the remedial methods themselves, which can also be optimized with experience to serve the ultimate goal of site closure.

The capstone event is linking advanced site diagnostics and remediation methods to ensure that the maximum value of available technologies is incorporated into liability management systems. This involves focusing on accelerating regulatory closure strategies and, at the highest level, assisting in developing guaranteed fixed-price and liability transfer programs.
