Utility-scale power generation and transmission

WSP's Future Energy experts provide project management, front end engineering, design, modelling and a suite of other consultancy services across the whole project life-cycle of large scale grid connected future energy projects. With the ability to work as either the Owner’s or Lender’s engineer, we provide complete solutions from pre-feasibility through to design, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning.

We are firmly embedded in the future energy market, we understand both the established and emerging technologies including; bioenergy; geothermal; hydropower; offshore energy; onshore and offshore wind; solar; co-generation; and transmission and distribution. Our projects include: the 1.8GW Argyll Array offshore wind farm in England; a large-scale biogas plant in the Sundsvall region of Sweden; the Kalahari Solar Power Project which is the first concentrated solar power plant to reach feasibility stage in Southern Africa; working with E.ON to increase the capacity from their Swedish hydro power plants by 70 GWh between 2010 and 2013; and supporting the 220km long 400kV overhead transmission line which is connecting renewable energy sources in the Highlands to the population in central Scotland.

Onsite energy supply

WSP also design and deliver energy supply projects which independently power property and regeneration schemes. We start with your objectives. We model your energy demand. We conduct feasibility and resource assessments on the technology options. We plan and identify infrastructure requirements and conduct impact assessments. And we advise on the design, sizing, installation, siting and cost benefit of the proposed renewable technology strategy.

We have experts all around the world delivering projects including; Graylingwell where we designed the zero-carbon methodology for the new town which included the UK’s largest domestic installation of photovoltaic; Masdar where we designed the sustainable infrastructure strategies for the detailed masterplan of the world’s first zero-carbon zero-waste city; both Stockholm Royal Seaport and Brunnshög, a new city district in Lund, where we are investigating local production of wind, solar energy, biogas, and district heating and cooling and smart grids, as well as energy reduction, low emission and passive solutions.

Energy management and efficiency

We believe in an integrated and strategic approach to energy management, one that tackles demand reduction and management, price minimisation, invoice management, and considerations for self-supply. Our expertise can take you from; comprehensive low-carbon building design; detailed energy technology design; automated meter reading; energy audits; efficiency programmes; advice on extracting value from controls and trading schemes; ensuring regulatory compliance; and energy performance contracting management.

In the USA WSP and Accenture worked with Microsoft to prove the energy end use and carbon emission benefits of cloud computing, in the UK in collaboration with Brookfield Multiplex Green we saved £220,000 in energy bills and 1,160 in CO2 per annum for an office building in London’s Canary Wharf, in Australia we provided integrated services, including low energy advice, for the Melbourne Convention Centre which has been awarded a world first 6 Star Green Star Pilot rating, in Sweden with several property owners e.g. Svenska Bostäder and Alingsåshem, where we’ve designed retrofitting solutions reduced their energy end use and CO2 emissions with more than 50 per cent.
