The £400M ‘Fit for the Future Project’ will centralise all clinical services currently delivered by three hospitals in the city of Stoke on Trent and surrounding areas into the site of the University Hospital of North Staffordshire. At a second site in north Stoke a modern community and sub-acute hospital will improve the local health provision.
There are six elements to ‘Fit for the Future’
- A new accident and emergency department
- A new diagnostic and treatment centre for non-emergency treatments and procedures requiring patient stays of less than 23 hours
- A new maternity unit
- A new cancer unit, incorporating oncology, haematology and outpatient and radiotherapy services
- A new cardiac services area, bringing together cardiac surgery and cardiology.
- The Haywood site in North Stoke will have new wards and a walk-in centre as well as being refurbished and landscaped
Work began on site in October 2005 and will continue for seven years, through a phased programme of delivery. Working for contractor, Laing O’Rourke, WSP is providing a seamless “one-stop-shop” service to deliver high quality, innovative designs for guaranteed, long-term performance of the hospital buildings, against tight timescales and within fixed budgets. WSP must also meet the challenge of maintaining hospital facilities and ensuring all functions can continue whilst altering the entire infrastructure of the hospital complex.
