The Mall of the Emirates is a large mixed used development in Dubai providing the largest retail development in the Middle East, the first indoor ski-slope in the region and a 5-star hotel.
WSP were appointed in 2002 to provide Mechanical & Electrical Infrastructure, Public Health Services as well as Specialist Fire Engineering advice for this prestigious 260,000 sqm development.
A number of hotel suites, restaurants and a 90 metre long section of mall overlook the ski slopes (via a fully glazed wall). The multi-level malls are themed to reflect Arabic heritage and include a number of anchor stores, of which the Harvey Nichols flagship store in the Middle East is the main attraction. (WSP also carried out the fit out design of this store.)
There are also other large department stores, and over 350 line shop units. In addition, the development includes a 400-suite hotel (5 star), together with recreational facilities and all the local amenities required of a small town.
The entire development is served by a three storey energy centre that houses chilled water plant capable of producing 16,000 Tons of refrigeration, the total connected electrical load is in excess of 100 Megawatt. The chilled water distribution system has variable flow primary and secondary circuits enabling huge energy efficiency savings to be realised.
WSP’s expertise in simulating smoke movement using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) allowed for efficient smoke control without installing large numbers of smoke reservoirs in the ceiling. Our strategy for smoke extraction incorporates the use of both natural and mechanical ventilation. In many locations the day-to-day extract is used for smoke extraction.
The excellent service provided by WSP on this project has lead to continued repeat business, with WSP now being the client’s MEP and Fire consultant of choice.
