Robert Tattersall

Rob Tattersall works as a highways engineer in the Civils team and is based in the Basingstoke office. He attended the University of Portsmouth and studied an MEng in Civil Engineering.

Why did you chose WSP?

I’ve always been interested in the construction industry.  My father was a civil engineer, and with high grades in maths and physics I was keen to follow a similar career. At my WSP interview everyone was very friendly and I could tell from what they told me, as well as from articles I had read in the press, that WSP was a company that was expanding and going places.  I wanted to be part of that.

Has it met your expectations?

As a graduate engineer working for WSP Civils, no two days are the same.  My work could include anything from using design standards to design or check the many highway features (such as alignments, safety fencing, signs, road markings), to liaising with relevant parties on a contract (the client, sub consultants or local authorities).

What are you currently working on?

I was recently appointed as graduate training representative for my region of WSP, helping co-ordinate progression towards the chartered professional review through videos, discussion groups and specific in-house graduate courses.  At the moment I’m working towards becoming a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers.  Looking further into the future, my long term ambition is to become Project Manager of a really big scheme – I’d like to feel I can make an impact on society!
